Merritt+Pardini Teaming On Naval Base Building

Bremerton - The Navy has awarded a $24 million housing project at Naval Station Bremerton to a design-build team that includes Seattle architects Merritt+Pardini.

Building P-301 will be the first of seven new buildings that will provide shore-based accommodation for aircraft carrier personnel. The 97,000-sq.-ft. building will have 132 units and is required to blend with three existing, nearby buildings in appearance and historical presence.
The building's first five stories will be of concrete masonry construction with a brick façade, and the top three floors cement stucco. The structure will feature a 125-ft. setback for anti-terrorism/force protection compliance, and concrete barriers between the sidewalks and the building. The master plan developed for the project submittal outlines the building's integration into the surrounding natural environment using meandering pathways, garden areas, and decorative rockery.

The project is part of the Navy's long-term plan to renovate or replace deteriorating housing on its bases. The contract was awarded under a $600 million MACC that covers work at installations in California and other Western states. Contractor Soltek Pacific teamed with Merritt+Pardini, as it has on other recent military projects at Everett Naval Station and McChord AFB.

Joining Merritt+Pardini, Soltek and the Navy on the BEQ team are structural and civil engineer KPFF; mechanical engineer Notkin; electrical engineer Sparling, and landscape architect Bruce Dees and Associates.

The project is scheduled for completion at the end of 2004.

Lorig Planning 33-Unit Mixed-Use Building

BLorig Associates (Seattle) recently applied for a building permit for the Ravenna Court project to be built on the site once occupied by Saxe Floral at the intersection of Northeast 65th Street and 25th Avenue Northeast.

Ravenna Court will consist of a 33-unit apartment building with ground floor retail space and underground parking, and eight, three-story wood-framed buildings containing 32 for-sale townhomes.

Working with Lorig on the project are Mithun, architect; Pascoe Landscape and Design, landscape architect; KPFF, civil engineering; Coughlin Porter Lundeen, structural engineering, and Key Engineering, mechanical engineering. Compass Construction is providing pre-construction services.

Just north of the popular University Village, the new complex will be easily accessible from the University of Washington and downtown Seattle. Construction on the combined residential and retail complex is slated to begin in the second quarter of 2003 with the first townhomes available for purchase spring 2004.
