Express Completes Upgrade To Pioneer Square Building

Seattle - Express Construction Company of Mercer Island, Wash., recently completed new seismic upgrades to the historic Union Trust Building located in Pioneer Square at 199 South Main Street. The project involved complicated structural support and masonry work in occupied spaces throughout the four-story commercial building.

Express installed specially engineered structural connections to the existing masonry columns and wood beams within the interior of the building's frame. The project involved significant coordination to adjust work schedules and staging to minimize interference with existing tenants who remained open, including D'Adamo/Woltz Gallery, which houses a substantial number of fine art pieces. The upgrade also required the team to cut through multiple floors in order to tie the existing structural support beams together with the roof structure above.

Brett Henkel, superintendent, and Patrick Donohue directed the project for Express. Other team members included Pioneer Masonry and Cox Wrought Iron.
