Tacoma Narrows Starts
Road Deck Phase
Tacoma
- Tacoma Narrows Constructors has been using Lifting Gear
Hire Corporation's electric winches and come-a-longs to erect
the new Tacoma Narrows bridge, near Tacoma along SR 16.
According to Tony Fiscelli, General Manager of Lifting Gear
Hire's USA Corporate Headquarters, located in Bridgeview,
Illinois, the electric winches are being used to inch large
gantries along giant spun cables that support a 710,000 pound
I-Beam on the new bridge. "A giant barge carries all
of the deck sections to the place where they will be erected
on the bridge," Fiscelli explained. "Strand jacks
are being used to lift the bridge deck pieces from these barges
into their final location on the main cable. Our come-a-longs
are then used to inch the deck plates closer before they are
settled into their final positions."
The very first Tacoma Narrows Bridge opened on July 1st,
1940, only to collapse in a windstorm several months later
on November 7, 1940. "Galloping Gertie", as the
bridge was known, became famous as "the most dramatic
failure in bridge engineering history". Industrial Property
Picked by Housing Developer.
Seattle - Port 106 LLC comprised of members Kauri Investments,
Ltd. and Ariel Development purchased the former NW Center
property at 1600 West Armory Way in Seattle for $12.5 million.
The purchase is part of a 1031 exchange after selling their
Port 106 SODO warehouse property earlier this month. The seller
was Seattle Monorail Project.
The site, which is zoned IGU45, is located between the planned
Whole Foods store and the Interbay Golf Course. "At eight
acres, the site is very large for an urban site and our team
wants to carefully plan how the site is redeveloped,"
said Kent Angier, Kauri President. It currently houses six
buildings that they plan to lease on short term leases while
they evaluate several redevelopment options for the property.
King County Looking
for Design-Builder on Brightwater
Seattle -This month, King County will advertise a request
for qualifications and proposals to design and build a deep-water
marine outfall for the Brightwater treatment system project
north of Seattle. The selected design-build team will complete
the outfall design, which is now at 30 percent completion.
As now planned, the outfall will consist of a 60-inch-diameter
pipe extending 4,700 feet from Point Wells into Puget Sound.
The 500-foot diffuser at the end of the pipe will be about
600 feet deep.
Firms and teams will be evaluated through the county's RFQ
procurement process. Those determined to be qualified will
then be invited to submit proposals and participate in the
remainder of the selection process. King County expects to
award the design-build contract by July 2007.
