Canal/Three Schools Finish/Absher Builds Resort

The Washington State Department of Transportation and Kiewit Construction, floated out the first set of pontoons for the Hood Canal floating bridge in early December.

Hood Canal Pontoon On Way to Bridge Location

Tacoma - The Washington State Department of Transportation and Kiewit General floated the first new State Route 104 Hood Canal Bridge Pontoons out of the Tacoma Concrete Technology graving dock in early December. Fifteen feet of water filled the graving dock, lifting up the 6,000 ton structures. Tug boats then towed the pontoons out of the dock and moored them in the Blair waterway.

Construction of the first three of the pontoons was completed in nine months. Fourteen new pontoons will be constructed at the graving dock in all, in separate cycles. Another three pontoons, built during the west half bridge replacement in the early 1980s will be retrofitted early this month.  The completed east-half pontoon roadway sections and fully assembled east-half drawspan will be floated into place during the bridge closure in May-June 2009.

The Hood Canal bridge is the longest floating bridge over saltwater in the world.
