DLR/Airport Buildings/TOTE/LNI

Marysville High School won an International award for DLR’s innovative design.

Seattle - DBM Contractors Inc. is completing a $4.2 milion excavation support system for the West 8th Office Building in Seattle.

TOTE operates a roll-on/roll-off (RO/RO) service between the ports of Anchorage and Tacoma, moving 53-foot highway trailers directly on and off the vessels. This service allows for fast, efficient cargo distribution throughout Alaska.

TOTE first began calling in Tacoma in 1976, when Port management and the local longshore workforce together marketed Tacoma's advantages to TOTE executives. Three decades later, more than 70 percent of all waterborne commerce between the lower 48 states and Alaska is handled through the Port of Tacoma on vessels operated by TOTE and Horizon Lines, the Port of Tacoma's other Alaska carrier.

Today, Alaska trade makes up 25 percent of the Port's total trade volume. In 2006, TOTE and Horizon Lines collectively handled more than $3.5 billion in goods between Tacoma and Alaska.

State Minimum Wage To Rise in January

Tumwater - Washington’s minimum wage will increase 14 cents to $8.07 an hour beginning Jan. 1, 2008.

The law requires that the state minimum wage be adjusted each year according to the change in the federal Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) during the 12 months ending each Aug. 31.

The CPI-W is a national index covering the cost of goods and services needed for day-to-day living. It increased 1.8 percent during the 12 month period ending in August, compared to a 3.9 percent increase during the same period in 2006, which led to a 30 cents-an-hour increase in the 2007 minimum wage.

The 1.8 percent increase, applied to Washington’s current minimum wage of $7.93 an hour, generated a 14-cent increase in next year’s minimum wage. Washington’s minimum wage applies to workers in both agricultural and non-agricultural jobs, although 14 and 15-year-olds may be paid 85 percent of the adult minimum wage.

Marysville High Design Wins International Award

Seattle - Marysville Getchell High School has been selected to receive a 2007 International DesignShare Merit Award for its innovative building design. Designed by architect DLR Group, the high school will open its doors to students in 2010.

The Annual DesignShare Awards Program honors educational facility design projects which focus on the future of learning, and exceed design standards set by professionals in both architecture and education. The international scope of the awards program places Marysville Getchell High School firmly among the top educational facilities in the world.

The buildings are designed around a shell-and-core concept with most load-bearing structure and plumbing drawn to outer walls. This provides maximum flexibility should there be a future need for space reconfiguration. The four SLC buildings are arranged around a central Community Commons facility to create a campus atmosphere.

Spokane Airport Boasts New Buildings

Spokane – A new 20,000-sq-ft facility housing Absolute Aviation Services and Empire Airlines plays a key role in the commercial aviation industry at the Spokane Airport.

The new facility was partially financed through a low interest loan and grant provided by the Community Economic Revitalization Board (CERB), which is part of the Washington State Department of Community, Trade and Economic Develop-ment. The balance of funds were comprised of the airport’s general revenue funds.

Absolute Aviation Services plays a key role in the support of a rapidly evolving airline industry now focused upon cutting costs and outsourcing many of the carriers’ customary functions. Utilizing in-house engineering expertise to repair high dollar expendable/throw-away components, the FAA-certified repair station has saved its airline customers a combined total of over $700,000 in 2005, $1.5 million in 2006 and an estimated $2 million in 2007. Ninety-five percent of Absolute’s repairs originate from out-of-state businesses or from other countries. In addition to the FAA, Absolute’s quality system has been approved by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), and meets the stringent requirements of the major U.S. airlines.

Terminal improvement Part of Lease Agreement

Tacoma - The Port of Tacoma Commission approved a restated lease with Totem Ocean Trailer Express, Inc. (TOTE) that calls for a redeveloped Blair Waterway terminal for TOTE's Alaska cargo business.

Under the lease, which runs through 2034, the Port will redevelop the TOTE terminal that will be up to 72 acres (29 hectares) in size.

TOTE's opportunity for growth is due to the Port's recently announced agreement with NYK Line to build a 168-acre (68-hectare) facility for container terminal operator Yusen Terminal Tacoma Inc. (YTTI), a wholly-owned subsidiary of NYK Line. Portions of TOTE's existing, 47-acre (19-hectare) terminal will be incorporated into the NYK terminal.

Construction on the $104.3 million TOTE Terminal is scheduled to begin in 2009 and be complete in 2011. YTTI construction will start in 2010 and be complete by mid-2012.
